It had been a day like any other followed by a night like any other. The wind rushing over the water's surface disturbed the water in the lagoon only slightly, causing the smallest ripples to appear on the surface. The stars that shone bright in the sky were reflected upon the water, making it seem as if it were glowing. It was a scene much like ones found on any other night on the island, and it was truly beautiful indeed. Or it should be to most. To Ivan, it was boring. The wind was much too cold, and the reflections from the stars was annoying.
Since the move to the island, Ivan had remained much like a ghost. He interacted with the inhabitants as little as he possibly could. He rarely bothered to walk outside much at all. The majority of his time was spent alone, within the uninviting, stone building that he called a home. He would always retire there as soon as he had done whatever job that was required of him. There was no reason for him to stay out any longer. Since they'd left the mainland, he didn't have much of anything anymore; only his new job, as if that really mattered.
And yet it did matter, or else he'd have left this godforsaken island not long after they arrived.
Still, he was stuck here now, and at this moment, he desired a quiet place to think. Of course, this thinking consisted of dwelling upon missed opportunities and broken promises from the past, but as was said, he had precious little left now.
He had remained in his home for awhile before the air in there seemed to thicken, nearly strangling him. So he stumbled out of the damned town and along the coast quite aways before stopping at the lagoon. Now, he neared the water and took a seat on the ground. It was so very clichéd to sit and stare at the water when one needed to think, but you couldn't deny water's soothing properties. At least all was quiet now.

The lagoon, sheltered by the dense jungle from the driving winds of the ocean, remained placid and rippling. Only now, at the windiest of times, was there even a ripple of current pushing the silvery black ripples from the murky deep to cascade silently on the lapping shoreline. It was peaceful, and despite the small ripples, completely flat.
But then the waters in their liquidity produced something strange. It was no less liquid than the water itself, but it bent the surface of glass and warped it, looping up shiny from the deep and then curling over the top of the ripples before sinking again. It was almost impossible to see this - so fluid and water-like itself that it may have been mistaken for water. And yet it was so distinct as to never be confused with something else.
A fish rolling, it's slimy scales wet and bright as it turned and sank. Or... was it a fish?
There was no other movement of this nature. The water remained flat after it, until suddenly there was no more water, and the shoreline had arrived. There, where water meets with solid land, the thing like water that was not water made another appearance. It slunk up and straight onto land, seeming to mold into the sand itself as it did so. In another moment it was gone though, and the water rippled only slightly more than it should.
"Hello,"
This thing, so human but so foreign did not look slightly able to speak until it did so, and when it did, did so with words that dripped like the water from its body - in a light, trickling way.
The thing, just as soon as it appeared, flowed back into the water, disappearing with that odd, rolling motion that caused the water envelop it seamlessly.
The ripples appeared again, and the rolling subsided for a more human shape to appear. A more... female human shape.
She folded her hands over her breasts and lay flat on the sand, half in and half out of the water, yet her tail remained molded into the sea.
"What's your name?"

The water was still very calm; the night remained quiet. Not much had changed since he first got here and, allowing his thoughts to begin racing, stared absently at the ground in front of him. There was no discernible movement to alert him of the presence of even the tiniest creatures in the lagoon. One might have thought that he was truly, completely alone.
Indeed, if he'd given much thought to his surroundings, he would have thought just that, until a peculiar, soft, and very sweet voice tore him out of the pit of his self-loathing, setting him back on the shore where his eyes were drawn to a shape close by the water. A very feminine shape.
He merely stared at the shape, not returning its greeting, and acting as if he'd never before seen a mermaid. Indeed, he had seen many before. He'd seen many a succubus in the past as well, but did that mean he no longer considered each one he met to be something truly unique and exotic? No... Of course not. And with a creature such as this, who appeared to exist for no reason other than to inspire lust in mortal men, it was as if he were expected to stare at it; to memorize the way her wet hair clung to her body...
"Ivan," He responded to her question as if he hadn't consciously heard her at all.
He had come here only to find a quiet place to think, but just then, a smile twitched at the sides of his mouth. Glancing over his shoulder as if he expected someone to be watching him, he rose from the ground to find a seat closer to the creature.
"Please forgive me if I'm... Interrupting anything. That wasn't my intent."
Perhaps he was going about it the wrong way by trying to isolate himself. After all, he had done nothing wrong. He deserved a little... Companionship now.

The creature looked very comfortable where she lay, not specifically favoring the air she breathed now, or the water she lightly stirred with her long and lovely tail. But since she was laying at such a low, comfortable angle, she had to tilt her head up slightly to meet his eyes.
Hers were an odd color - not human, but not so alien that they inspired mistrust or fear. They were a gentle blue, and blended softly into the whites of her eyes, making her eyes look larger and more interested in whatever it was she chose to look at.
"No," she flexed her fingers, resting at the ends of her elbows as she leaned up to gaze at him. Her sand-polished nails made thin, delicate lines in the sand. "There is nothing to interrupt."
If one could look past the soft blue of the eyes, they could then see her lips - ever drawn in a small, mischievous half-smile of delight.
"You look tense," she crooned, her tail surfacing just at the fin and making silvery swirls as the moonlight rippled off it. "The lagoon is so warm at night... Would you like to swim with me?"
Now as if tired of holding herself up in this weighted world above the water, she simply rested her head on her hands again, the silky-slick wet hair brushing up around her cheeks as she shifted and smiled.

Content to simply stare at the creature, Ivan was thoroughly enjoying how she looked from this new angle. From the subtle movements she made, to the way her chest rose and fell with each shallow breath she took, he was completely enchanted with her. His eyes rudely trailing her body, they rested on her face for just a moment, admiring her lovely eyes, though he quickly moved on to her chest and the rest of her body. Though the eyes were beautiful indeed, they only served to compliment the rest of her body.
He didn't bother telling himself that he was only staring for work-related reasons.
"Yes, my life's been quite troubling lately," He shrugged, as if it weren't important.
It was indeed important to him, and still in the back of his mind, but now wasn't the time to seek therapy, especially not from a creature such as this.
At her offer, he smiled warmly at her. He admired her forwardness, as he wasn't used to such a thing. It was a lovely change of pace, not that he was often out late meeting very well endowed young women.
"That would be lovely."

As soon as he'd said it, she was holding a hand out to him, was leading him into the water, was feeling the weight drain from her body.
She, though both of the land and the sea, primarily moved in the sea. Her form on land was too... bulky, shall we say? - in all the wrong places. The hips so full, and the chest so voluptuous... it was difficult to imagine something like her moving about on land; and she did so love the tail that fanned and fluttered beneath her. So she brought him to the sea, a trickle of laughter like the water dripping from the palm fronds. He still had his clothes on, and the water was no place for clothes.
"So much trouble," she sighed, sweetly, wrapping her arms around him as he drew deeper into the water. "There is no trouble here, in this lagoon."
And she was right. What would be wrong where the plants played their bright colors along the water, and the sun shone in the shallow water to create a sauna of peace and protection. There was no trouble here, away from the changing sea. This place was serene, always.
She ran her fingers along his chest, curious but coy as the fish that swam around them. And just like the fish, although she be languid and wandering in her ways, once she made her mind up, her will was done. The shirt was removed, and she brought her arms up from the depths and let her hair and hands engulf him.
"So much trouble," she repeated, with a touch more sadness. "And so much pain in this body."
By pain, she did not mean literal pain. Such things as knotted muscles and carried burdens were not seen in the sea, and she, with her limited knowledge, could only use the words she knew.
And in a swirl of the silvery rippling water, the blanket of lush, sweet-smelling hair was gone with the sinkissed arms. She circled around him, trailing one of her nails over his shoulder. A few more joined it, then the lucid fingers set on the cringed muscle, and gently massaged the cringe from them.
"Tell me what makes such hurt in you."
The fluid movements of her hands worked patiently up around his neck first, then slowly moved lower, even more slow to cleanse the fret from the sinew. She was not slimy, like the fish. She felt like the sand-smoothed sea glass - cool and refreshing to the touch, and very well understood of the depths and rises of his shirtless back as she poured over him.
It would be very hard to notice at all that the rest of his clothes had come off by now...

The moment she took his hand, he began to see the situation as a carefully laid trap for him. As he allowed himself to be led further into the water, he understood how he was merely another victim to fall into her trap. However, it was a role that he accepted without question. He might even have admitted that he was unreasonably happy to be in the situation that he was in, if he had been capable of rational thought at the moment. The creature had him completely enchanted- hypnotized, even. He barely understood her words, but the mere sound of her voice put him at ease. He moved along in a daze, unaware of all of her movements, just knowing that he enjoyed the feeling of her arms around him, and that he didn't want that to end.
Then it was gone.
He glanced around in confusion until he felt her hands move along his back, sending shivers of delight down his spine. Inhaling deeply, he closed his eyes, focusing on the soft hands as they slowly moved down his back. He remained vaguely aware that she was actually speaking words.
”Hurt?” He repeated the word as if it were something completely foreign to him, ”No... There is no hurt here.”
Whatever had brought him here didn't matter. Whatever he would deal with after he left didn't matter. Even the poor grammar didn't matter. This... Creature was the only thing that was important now. Only her and no one else. And... Where was she? Oh, right.
Reaching behind him, he took one of her hands and spun around so that he faced her. He seemed to be fascinated in her small hand, turning it over and over again in his own hands. Momentarily, he brought it up to his mouth, just barely brushing his lips against it. He then pressed her hand flat against his chest, just above his heart. With his other hand, he traced along her arm, up over her shoulder, running it through her hair. All the while, he maintained eye contact with her.
”I... Don't want to hurt anymore.”
The words were subconsciously uttered as he drew her closer to him. Somewhere in his disoriented mind, he understood that this creature wouldn't hurt him. Sometimes, that knowledge was all it took for someone to give themselves up to another, stranger though they may be.

It was very quiet in the lagoon, with the moon slung low and huge over the silver and black painted sea. The trees stirred not but a leaf now, in the dead of night, and the fish had surely gone somewhere safe to sleep... and she smiled, in that mischievous way.
Her hand, easily freed from his grasp, likewise traced its way up and down him, fingers sliding though hair, then shifting down to follow the clean lines of his strong arm; all while the fanning tail lay idle, letting him pull her in close. The smooth sea-glass hands tucking in close to her body as they both now lay flat across his chest. She inclined her head, the locks of hair spreading like a golden sheen through the water, and lay it on his shoulder. Her lips brushed at the strong lines there, now soothed and without tangle of stress. Her smile widened, and she brought her head up to place the smiling lips on his.
And they smiled no longer while they were there...

Though he had never been one to dream, that night's sleep, restful for once, had been punctuated by images and memories of his activities on that night. He could see the way the moonlight made her skin glisten, the sweet smell of her hair, the feeling of her heart beating so dangerously close to his. In these few, short months, had he really forgotten what it was like to share such an embrace with another? Much less someone whose name he hadn't thought to learn.
As his thoughts turned to the stillness of that water and the silence of the night, he was able to feel the faintest touch of the sun's rays, alerting him to the morning. A hand curled into a fist, feeling the sand slide through his fingers. However, that was all he found: a seemingly endless supply of sand. He slowly opened his eyes to stare at the empty space in front of him. Though he hadn't been expecting to find anything, it was rather disappointing all the same.
Sitting up, he ran his hands through his hair, glancing at the sand around him for any sign that anyone had passed through this area during the night. He found no such sign, though what he did find made him smile. His clothes had been gathered, folded, and placed neatly in a pile beside him. He appreciated the gesture.
As he pulled his clothes on, he looked out at the lagoon, wondering where she may have gone, though satisfied with the knowledge that he knew where to find her. With a chuckle, he decided that perhaps next time he would even ask for her name.
Without a second thought, he turned to leave the shore, already feeling rejuvenated and simply much happier than he had been when he first arrived at the lagoon. Simple companionship was enough to cure him of the disease that had frozen his soul over these past few months.
