Ein’s looks has often been compared to that of a pretty doll, and therefore about two out of every three people think Ein to be female; the rest think Ein is just a very feminine boy. Ein is only 162cm/5’4 and has a rather thin and wiry frame, making Ein a rather small person when compared to some. Ein’s eye color can be mistaken for a very yellow hazel from far away, but is obviously unnatural from close-up, so Ein is never seen without mirrored sunglasses. Ein’s complexion is smooth and quite consistent in its shades of color, supporting Ein’s doll-like appearance. Since the late 1900’s, Ein for the most part has retired all its dresses, preferring to hide the fact that it is actually genderless even in its skin by wearing clothing that is appropriate for either gender [Ein's choice of clothing is very old-fashioned, but it does try to add "modern quirks", like keeping its shirt untucked]. Another thing Ein is never seen without an old-fashioned key[cleverly disguised wind-up key] on a chain around her neck. Ein has short hair, and a keyhole on the back of the base of its neck [as it is its source of life, its wind-up keyhole is still present in its skin].
True Appearance: orange-amber : light smoky gray/rusty/silvery white colored : 17cm/7”

Ein’s true form is inspired by a bat, thus it looks like one for the most part. If you saw Ein flying, you would think that it was just any old bat, the body 17cm/7” long and its wingspan being 55cm/1’10”. Once that bat lands and you get a chance to actually look at it, you can see that its eyes are marble-like jewels, its body made of flexible metal that was welded together, and its wings made of sewn spider-silk. Once you get over the shock of seeing a clockwork creature, you can see the care that was taken to build the little creature. Its “fur” [actually thin wire] is a light smoky gray with touches of a rusty color where its joints are, and its wings are a silver-white color, thanks to the material it is made of.

Ein does its best not to get on people’s bad sides and is a nice, slightly reserved, person who does its own thing, though Ein will sing to your tune if it agrees with you. As every rose has its thorns, Ein has been known to be quite sarcastic on occasion. Also, when Ein needs to be wound up soon or there will be a problem, Ein’s behavior can be a bit strange, like randomly freezing up, repeating something twice without seeming to realize what it had done, and/or its movements beoming stiff and jerky [thankfully, that does not happen very often]. Ein also has an insatiable curiosity and never tires of things it likes [it is not uncommon to see Ein doing random math equations for the fun of it, or playing cards for hours on end]. For the most part, Ein is polite, loyal, and willing to do next to anything for the people it cares about. If Ein has no ties to you or no reason to like you, on the other hand, keep an eye on this one [and your wallet]; Ein has a focus that allows it to anything without thinking about the consequences first, and thus has no qualms about doing something deceitful or tricking you. Oh, and if you hear any rumor that Ein is insane, well, no need to worry about its sanity. Yes, the clockwork creature is very quirky at times, but it still knows the differnece between black and white!

“Yes ma’am, we are open right now” the clockmaker told the woman entering his shop as the last of twilight faded. Immediately, the young man had gone back to polishing the grandfather clock’s face, but he turned to face the woman again when he could no longer hear the click of her shoes against the floor. The angle of the woman’s hat was hiding her face from him now, but he could clearly see that she was looking at Ein. “Ma’am, that is not for sale…” “What is it?” She asked. “It’s… well, it’s a mechanical bat. Rumor has it that de Vinci designed it; the late smith sold it to me and I… well, I repaired it.” The clockmaker was still a young man, and the older woman [but not that much older] was quite beautiful. You can imagine just how distracted he was. “Does it work?” The clockmaker started to laugh at that question, though there was no cruelty in it. “It depends on what you mean by “work”. Ein, I call her Ein, can be wound up and her “heart” and wings work just fine, but she will never fly. I am skilled in my trade, but I have no idea how to make her wings fly in any direction other than straight. She cannot jump into the air, she cannot turn; all she can do is fly straight, and even then I have to wind her up before she can start doing that. Yes, she does work, to answer your question, but she cannot fly.” The woman could see that the prodigal clockmaker was proud of his “Ein”. Yes, she was quite aware of the fact that its loss would hurt the clockmaker when the woman snatched up the clockmaker’s creation and sprinted from the store with surprising agility considering her outfit. As the shocked cries of the young man reached her fleeing ears, the woman whispered to the clockwork bat, “You will fly”.
The moment after Rosamund Whitewood recited the incantation; the little bat sprung into the air and beat the sky with its strong, thin wings. Then it fell. But it tried again, and this time it managed to perch on top of Miss Whitewood’s bedpost. The sorceress chuckled [Ein still lacked the grace of a true flyer; its jerky flight was very comical in appearance], but the sound was drowned out by the creature’s high pitched calls. The woman had seen enough bats to know that those were not the calls bats used to see. “What are you looking for?” The calls continued. “Oh, that boy in the shop... you can remember him? How?!” The calls got more frantic. Confusion and a touch of guilt was written all over Rosamund’s face. “That is interesting... Little one, I'm sorry; he cannot hear you.” When the bat did not appear to have heard her, Rosamund tried calling the name the clockmaker had given it: Ein. Ein finally looked at Rosamund, confusion somehow appearing in its eyes [Rosamund thought that they might be marbles because they were so perfectly round]. Rosamund gave Ein a tentative smile.
The clockmaker had lost his best friend [he did not get much time away from the shop, so Ein had been the only one he could talk to]. He had not bothered looking up when the door opened again about nine days after the day of Ein's theft. It was a young man, a boy really, several years the clockmaker's junior. The customer's actions were unexpected; he did not even look at the shop's wares. This boy instead walked right up to the clockmaker and smiled. The clockmaker was startled; the boy's actions were unexpected, and, upon closer inspection, this boy could have been a girl. But that made no sense; the boy was wearing pants and girls did not wear pants. But the boy also appeared to be wearing a corset. It was just strange, plain and simple. The clockmaker looked back at the customer's face to ask them why they were dressed so bizarrely when he saw their eyes. They were the same eyes he had seen every day for several months, just humanoid now. "Ein?" He asked, completely and utterly shocked. Ein's smile grew larger.
